utility – urban – unique
~ utilitarian points of the city of Spišská Nová Ves ~
For the first time, the research project of the Gallery of Spiš Artists brings a comprehensive list of sculptural realizations in public space in the Spiš region with comprehensive photo documentation, defining their location and attributing authorship. The banner exhibition presents 87 selected sculptural realizations from the districts of Gelnica, Kežmarok, Levoča, Poprad and Stará Ľubovňa.
Fine art integrated into the public space of the city is the art of the most massive spectator. In addition to the primary function associated with elementary physical experience, it participates in the hierarchization and modification of the environment in order to better concentrate and localize the population.
The territory of the Spiš region hides "unseen", over time forgotten and merging sculptures in the changing environment, which were created from the 50s of the 20th century to the present. These sculptural realizations represent a mirror of the time and characterize the society's approach to the application of fine art in public space.
