ARTIS MONUMENTUM

The ARTIS MONUMENTUM project is the story of the thirty-five years of the Gallery of Spiš Artists and represents, in a figurative sense, a testimony of the artistic and creative life of the Spiš region. It is a continuation of the 2017 exhibition titled Container of Memories which commemorated the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Gallery and is presented as part of the Gallery Stories dramaturgical cycle of exhibitions. The exhibition recycles the documentary, exhibition, event and collecting activities over the course of seven “five-year plans” (1987 – 2022) and stands as a unique, albeit limited, cross-section of the thirty-five years of the Gallery’s activities through selected events, offering a “behind the scenes” look at the standard exhibition and academic work. Information panels are accompanied by interactive displays with overviews of visuals, films, acquisition activities and selections from the Gallery’s collection, while educational displays allow visitors to get involved in “documentation” work. A series of documentary films maps the events and the artistic and managerial personalities of the Gallery, and tablet presentations give lists of exhibitions held, publication and academic activities, employees and biographies of the directors of the Gallery. The “Portal of Memories”, a concise overview of the history of the Gallery serves as a connection point between the documentary and exhibition sections, offering a unique account of the activities of one of the youngest memory institutions in Slovakia.

Mgr. Mária Šabľová, the curator of the project: “The Gallery of Spiš Artists collects, professionally prepares, manages, preserves and exhibits works of fine art to the public. In addition to its acquisition and exhibition activities which are its primary roles, the Gallery also focuses on cultural-educational and publication activities and broadens its library of published works in the fields of art from year to year. The exhibition is a retrospective overview of the wide range of the Gallery’s activities from 1987 to the present day, presenting photographs, articles, texts and other documents which provide a first-hand account of the formation of the Gallery and its establishment as a fixture in the field of the fine arts. Conceptually, the exhibition is a limited selection from the wealth of documentary material relating to 484 exhibitions, 4448 events, 2446 acquisitions for the collection and the library of 4787 published works. The walls of the gallery have seen much over the course of 35 years; 653,780 visitors have passed through the gates and 2579 exhibiting artists have also contributed to the story of the Gallery. Artis Monumentum is, above all, a commemorative exhibition which acquaints contemporaries with the mosaic of events that shaped the Gallery of Spiš Artists into its current form, an institution which plays such a significant role in the cultural life of the region.”
